Jeanne and Dane visit Eden Sanctuary a place Dane built in 2001 on 128 acres of Hana Jungle
We visited with Dane’s old friend and farm manager Dale Basgall who took us to the Eden Sanctuary site, that Dane built over a 10 year period from 2000 to 2010 and then sold to a wealthy researcher who now uses it as a retreat center for his team of scientists. It’s the largest residential structure in East Maui, and quite a story behind what it took to get built in the jungles of Maui. (more on that later)
A 30,000 square foot structure designed to house scientists in “pods” (separated townhouse dwellings) caved out of the jungle along with gardens and growing spaces for an experimental farming operation. It started in the year 2000 thru 2010 when it was sold to a wealthy Californian who was also using the property as a research center/retreat. 128 acre property in Hana is very special with next door neighbor’s like Kris Kristofferson and Sheryl Crow
Lunch with Dale and Jeanne at the Hana Ranch restaurant. Then we we were off to see the sites. First stop was the most spiritual site in all of Hawaii. Piilani Heiau – at Kahanu Gardens. Dale works on their tractors so it was free admission for us.
Check out that Taro. Next stop the Hana Lava Cave – that goes under Eden Sanctuary.
After lunch we went to meet another of Dane’s old employees – Alana Ross, who was managing the Lava Cave adventure and after a few hugs and catching up after 15 years – we grabbed our flashlights and went into the caves… Here are a few pics. (*brrrr – it was cold down there)
We were not wearing the best of shoes. We bought those wet shoe things and they were so thin we were tripping over the cave floor rocks. We said our good-byes to Alana after only 20 minutes in the cave (which is miles long – and one of the longest in the world and goes underneath Eden Sanctuary) and headed back for a much needed afternoon nap.
Then after our nap, we were off to the Red Sand beach.
We laid the towels on the coarse sand and watched the people in the small cove… and then back on the treacherous hike home. Of course Jeanne was like a happy 12 year old and ran most of the way on it – no matter how steep or dangerous.
Then back to our love-shack for wine, a final sunset and more moonlight delight…. Every moment was amazing.
About an hour after sunset – we got this full-moon-rise off our deck. Amazing. Make the magic happen!
